Learning to Speak Toddler

Before I became a parent I would occasionally catch myself watching my friends communicate with their toddlers in amazement. After the child finished speaking which to me sounded a bit like Charlie Brown I would inevitably say, “What did he/she say?” They always knew and said you’ll figure it out when the time comes. Sure enough I have hit that stage with my daughter and I completely understand her bizarre baby language.

While in California on vacation everyday my daughter would enjoy a morning walk with her Pappou (Greek for Grandpa). On that walk she would have a great time and come back full of excitement and ready to relay her experience. Here is how it would go.

Chloe: Bah boom Bah boom (waving arms, and smiling big)
Me: O yeah you saw trash trucks what else?
Chloe: Woo woo woo and bark barks
Me: You saw a fire truck and some dogs that’s fun
Chloe: Bah Bah Bah! And Beeeee’s (pointing to the sky)
Me: There were balls on your walk and birds? That’s awesome!
Chloe: Wing! Wing! (And walks towards the back door to her swing)

Just like that our conversation is done. It’s too cute and I love our talks but to the average passer by they might as well assume we are speaking gibberish to each other.
